Parts of Speech
When it comes to learning a new language, many people get caught up in the rules of grammar. However, the truth is that English grammar is not as important in speaking as you might think. In fact, many learners of English as a second language have a better grasp of grammar than native speakers. So, what's up?
Grammar vs. Communication
While grammar is essential for writing and formal communication, it is generally ignored in speaking. The primary goal of speaking a language is to understand and be understood. Learners that are not afraid to make mistakes and are willing to take risks in order to improve their language skills are much more likely to excel in speaking.
Different or Weird: They're Both OK
Language is a living, evolving entity, and it is important to own your use of it. Learners like you bring a unique perspective to English, and native speakers enjoy experiencing this enlightenment.
So, the next time you find yourself worrying about your English grammar skills in a conversation, remember that speaking is about communication, connection, and expression. State your piece in your unique voice and don't be afraid to make mistakes or use hand signals. After all, language is a tool for connecting with others, and as long as you can get your message across, that's what truly matters.
Form and Function
What is a Noun?
Nouns are words that represent people, places, things, or ideas. They serve as the subject of a sentence or the object that receives the action.
How do Verbs Work?
Verbs are most often action words that express what the subject is doing. They can also act as auxiliaries in the more cumbersome verbal tenses (e.g., We have had this before), and to convert odd orders like, "You want coffee," into reasonable questions such as, "Do you want coffee?" The participle form of a verb can also be used like an adverb, as in "He's tired," or "She's done."
What is the Role of Adjectives?
Adjectives "dress up" nouns or pronouns. They provide more information about the noun, such as its size, color, quantity, or any other quality. With adjectives, an ordinary mutt can be anything from a stray dog to a blue-ribbon champion.
How do Adverbs Function?
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They answer questions like how it was done, when it was done, where it was done, or to what extent they did it.
What are Pronouns and their Purpose?
Pronouns are words that replace nouns to avoid repetition. They can refer to people, places, things, or ideas.
How do Prepositions Help in Sentences?
Prepositions answer important questions about a subject or object (expressed as a noun or pronoun) in relationship to the rest of the ideas in a sentence. They indicate location, time, direction, or possession.
What do Conjunctions Do?
Conjunctions are like bridges between words, phrases, and clauses. They link ideas and show the relationship between them. Whether it's adding information (and), contrasting ideas (but), or showing cause and effect (so), conjunctions help create a smooth and logical progression.
